A Helpful Guide to the new SHRM HR Certification

A lot of questions have risen since SHRM (Society of Human Resource Management) announced the new HR Certifications that will take place starting in 2015.

Additional Information will be given to providers about how to start offering credits towards recertification throughout 2014. In the meantime, here are some helpful FAQ’s to help you understand the new SHRM HR Certifications:

What is the new SHRM Certification?

The new comprehensive certification will be both ‘competency’ and ‘real world’ based.

The competency model is based on eight factors:

  • Communication
  • Relationship Management
  • Ethical Practice
  • Business Acumen
  • Critical Evaluation
  • Global and Cultural Effectiveness
  • Leadership and Navigation
  • Consultation

When will it take place?

The certification will officially launch January 1, 2015. Study materials for the exam will be available starting December 2014. The first exam is scheduled tentatively for May 2015. Also, starting January 1, 2015, professionals in good standing with their HRCI certification are able to begin the process of getting the SHRM certification.

How often will I need to recertify?

The certification will be on a 3-year recertification cycle. The exam will be made available by SHRM multiple times a year. The first exam is scheduled in May 2015.

What if I am already in good standing?

If you are already in good standing with your HRCI certification, then you are eligible for the SHRM certification, at no cost. December 31, 2015 is the deadline to complete:

  1. A document that states your current certification is in good standing.
  2. A signed SHRM code of ethics.
  3. An online tutorial of HR competencies. This tutorial will take less than one hour, plus a quiz at the end.

Also, you do not need to drop your HRCI certification in order to get your SHRM certification. Both are acceptable.

How will SHRM and HRCI support the new certification?

SHRM: The Society of Human Resource Management will have a separate certification known as the SHRM Certification Board, which will run the new certification program. The Certification Commission will oversee all aspects of the certification program. This will hopefully result in eliminating any conflict of interest.

HRCI: The HR Certification Institute will continue to support its certification as it is now.

What if I am in the middle of a re-certification?

Anyone in the process of being recertified can still keep their HRCI certification. SHRM will continue to get its programs HRCI certified through the end of 2014. All programs offered in 2015 will no longer support the HRCI certification.

What are the new levels of the SHRM certification?

SHRM Senior Certified Professional: If you currently hold a SPHR, GPHR, or HRMP, you fall under the senior level. This level will be directed for senior and executive level positions.

SHRM Certified Professional: If you currently hold a PHR or HRBP, you fall under the early career level. This level is directed towards entry and mid-level positions.
