Program Description

Supervisory Series: Fundamentals Track (formerly Supervisory Series I) 

In this six-module, comprehensive series, participants will gain fresh insights into their role as supervisor via self-assessments, group discussion, and opportunities for practice.

The series includes a focus on their role as leader, communication skills, conflict resolution, performance management, employment law, and employee engagement.

Participants will receive job aids and resources to apply the skills and implement the best practices they learn. They will also journey through the yourERC Learning Portal to accentuate the hands-on learning experience.  

ERC’s Supervisory Series Development Path includes the 10 most critical skills for supervisors.

The Fundamentals Track is the first six courses. The Advanced Track  is the final four courses (click here for description).

Supervisors who complete the Fundamentals Track receive their Supervisory Proficiency Certificate. 
Supervisors who complete Fundamentals and Advanced Tracks receive their Supervisory Mastery Certificate.

Role of the Supervisor


In the first session of the six-part series, the following topics will be discussed:

  • Attributes of successful supervisors
  • Relationship between successful supervision and trust
  • Roles and responsibilities of a supervisor as a leader
  • Transition from individual contributor to supervisor
  • Common challenges faced by supervisors

Communication Skills


In session two of the series, these learning points will be discussed:

  • Meaningful communication as a supervisor
  • Importance of building relationships and rapport with others
  • Influences of body language and tone of voice on verbal communication
  • Active listening skills
  • Social style awareness and how to adapt to others’ styles for more effective communication

Conflict Management


In session three of the series, these learning points will be discussed:

  • Definitions of conflict, benefits, and consequences
  • Costs and causes of conflict
  • Conflict management styles
  • Strategies to manage and more positively resolve conflict
  • Practical tools for dealing with challenging people, challenging situations, and dysfunctional conflict


Managing Employee Performance


The fourth session of the series includes:

  • The Performance Management Cycle and Partnership
  • SMART goals for effective performance evaluation
  • Effective and meaningful feedback practices
  • SIMPLE system for documenting and tracking performance
  • Strategies for delivering an evaluation

Employment Law


The fifth session of the series is taught by an employment law attorney who discusses employment law, including:

  • Overview of the legal landscape
  • Workplace discrimination and harassment
  • Employee leaves of absence
  • Employee performance issues

Engaging & Retaining Talent


The final session of the series focuses on how to engage and retain talent as a supervisor. This includes gaining perspective on:
